DESCRIPTION

The Old Holy Monastery of Saint John the Forerunner, hidden on a wild vertical slope among the biblical rocks south of Desfina. It was built in the 13th or 14th century, during the Palaiologan era. During the 1821 Revolution, the monastery played a significant role, hosting the leader of Roumeli, Bishop Isaiah, and the young hero Athanasios Diakos. General Makrygiannis mentions the monastery in his Memoirs as a place of reverence and pilgrimage.
