DESCRIPTION
The Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior is one of the most significant and beautiful 12th-century monuments in Greece and is a characteristic example of Middle Byzantine church architecture.
Inside the church, during the monument’s restoration work by the Ministry of Culture (2008–2009), fragments of mosaics, remnants of marble revetments and Byzantine frescoes, as well as fragments of architectural sculptures were found, which were included in the restoration of its Middle Byzantine templon.
The sculpted decoration of the marble templon is of exceptional interest due to the richness of its themes and the variety of forms rendered with aesthetic perfection.
Outside the church, a tile-roofed cist grave and parts of the apse and walls of an early Christian basilica were uncovered.
